City of Plymouth and Plymouth-Canton Community Schools Consider Recreation Partnership for East Middle School Field Improvement Project
The City of Plymouth and Plymouth-Canton Community Schools (P-CCS) have announced a potential partnership focused on enhancing recreational facilities at East Middle School. The proposed project would involve the installation of synthetic turf on select green spaces, intended for use by both the city and the school district.
A Parks and Recreation millage will appear on the ballot on November 5. If approved, this funding could support the development of a full 120-yard field and an additional half-field turf surface. These improvements are aimed at maintaining and expanding recreational offerings, which may include sports such as lacrosse, field hockey, and soccer. During the school year, the fields would be accessible to P-CCS during school hours and immediately following the school day. In the late afternoon and evening, as well as throughout the summer, the city would have access for its recreational programs and camps.
“The City administration and staff has been working extremely hard over the past few years to improve recreation services in Plymouth, and we believe this partnership can help us satisfy the needs of our residents,” said Plymouth Mayor Suzi Deal.

“We are very excited to be working with the City of Plymouth again on a recreation partnership that would benefit our entire community,” said P-CCS Superintendent Dr. Monica Merritt. “Many years ago, P-CCS partnered with the City on the Cultural Center and that project has provided enjoyment for our shared audiences for years. The potential East Field improvement is truly a win-win situation for our students and community.”
As part of this partnership, P-CCS will lease the property to the city at a nominal fee for an extended term. While specific details are still being finalized pending the outcome of the millage election, annual maintenance costs will be covered by user fees, like other fields that the city uses. Funding for future synthetic turf replacements over the next ten years will primarily come from non-resident and rental fees.
